This is a non mechanical method of forming an eye, and is now only used where the application is required. In this process the rope is bent over to form a loop and secured back on itself. In this splice each strand is tucked behind a corresponding strand in the single part in a direction against the lay of the rope. Three sets of tucks are made, then half the wires in each strand are broken out and two further tucks made, this reduces the splice into a taper and then finally served with wire.
John Hemsley Ropes have facilities and qualified riggers to under take this process, which has been past- on from generations and is a dying art.
The short splice has advantages over mechanical splicing in situations where mechanical splicing is restrictive or is in hot environments.
